This contains much of the material from their other CDs (before Genuine Negro Jig), but even if you have all that stuff, its worth a listen.Some of the tunes were recrded live at various venues early in their career, such as "Jack "O Diamonds" which has a nice mountain feel to it. The version of the country classic "Sitting On top of the World" (a staple of Black string bands some eight decades ago) is quite well done with Dom Flemmons lead, as well as the subversive "Bye Bye Policeman" from the legendary country bluesman Jim Jackson (I would have loved to hear the CCDs take on Jackson's OLD DOG BLUE. Maybe they'll do this in the future). This also has the classic JALIDONG, which appears in an identical version on COLORED ARISTOCRACY. Here, Rhihannon's sister leads in with a poem called "Banjo Dreams" about Black musicians reclaming the pre-jazz heritage of string band music, which segues into charter Sankofa...
