5.0 out of 5 stars Just Like Being There, July 23, 2004
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
I run a Big Band in Central Pennsylvania, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra has always been a major inspiration for the type of show that we do ("Not your Grandfather's Big Band"). This disc seemed to appear out of nowhere, and I'm glad it did. The second disc is taken directly (minus about 2 songs) from the "Live in Japan" DVD, and it's great to finally have a version of that for the car. I especially like his cover of "Get me to the Church on Time, which I think is the Quincy Jones / Sinatra version, only "Setzerized". I also like the Pink Panther theme in the middle of Stray Cat Strut, and the Guitar / Trumpet dogfight at the end of Jumpin East of Java. But, to me, the first disc is the jewel of this set. Setzer actually says in the liner notes that the first disc's Montreal concert was from the early years when the band was young and hungry (paraphrasing). It seems very true. No song proves that point more than the early version of Rock this Town... Read more

There is NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING like the BSO live in concert, but this collection is as close as you can get to the absolute bliss, power, and pure adrenaline of BSO in person.

It is also a chance to experience the growth and polishing of the band over the years. Disk One seems to have a slightly odd sound mix and is a little rough around the edges. I don't recall that from the concert, but memory fades with age...and it was just such a thrill to see and hear people make such amazing music! Thank you Brian!!!

I do, however distinctly remember the Phoenix concert that was similar to Disk Two...and this is pretty darn close. Brian's musical and vocal talent is truly a gift. It is reproduced beautifully with all of the highs, lows, growls, and yodels! Bernie Dresel is amazing as usual. He is the king of drummers and has some great features on Disk 2 that will confound and bewilder anyone who understand what it takes to produce that percussion.

    Since... Read more

I bought this album last week and I must say I am incredibly impressed. I recently started listening to big band music on a more serious basis. Having been a fan of Brian Setzer from his time in the Stray Cats band, I started listening to the Stray Cats Greatest Hits CD I bought a few years ago (I hadn't listened to it for a long time), and now I'm hooked on big band music. This is really a great value (I didn't order it from Amazon.com, but I wish I had, as it would have saved me $5.00 -- I paid about $20.00 for it at Borders Books & Music). If you like big band music, definitely get this 2-disc Ultimate Collection -- Disc 1 is a concert from Montreal and Disc 2 is a concert from Japan (my personal favorite is the Montreal concert, but they are both excellent, and there's just nothing like listening to live music)).

For those of us who are at the crossroads of our faith, for those of us who feel lost, lonely and left this cd is a must for your mind, soul and spirit. What a soundtrack from heaven is this cd for those of us standing at the cross roads of faith. This cd can be used not only to encourage your faith walk, but others who need that musical uplifting. This young man is truly a God send. I am so proud of him. This cd makes one proud to be a child of God, because it is so beautiful !!!! In this honor of our great loss of Brother Don Conrnellious and our beloved gifted songbird Whitney Houston, now at a time like no other, we need to lift up and encourage each other, in the name of Jesus. You never know what a hug, an embrace , or encouraging word or song may mean to someone. It may be the difference between life or death, giving up or going on. We must begin to encourage one another. Thank you young man Brian Courtney Wilson for giving us such a beautiful musical gospel soundtrack... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Mischievous and Bewitching, October 4, 2008
This review is from: Brian Asawa - The Dark Is My Delight And Other 16th Century Lute Songs / Tayler (Audio CD)
Brian Asawa's voice is distinctive and that has not always worked to his advantage. There is no danger of confusing him with any other countertenor. In tone and quality he ranks with Scholl and Daniels and perhaps has a more fluid command of the higher notes. In this CD, he performs songs from the traditional countertenor repertoire with considerable freshness, spirit and humor. These are the popular hit songs of Shakespeare's era and while we don't know the details of how they were performed I like what Brian has done with these songs.

          5.0 out of 5 stars HEAVEN!!!, September 30, 1998
          By A Customer
This review is from: Brian Asawa - The Dark Is My Delight And Other 16th Century Lute Songs / Tayler (Audio CD)
When you start the CD and sit back you will literally think you have died and gone to heaven! Brian Asawa is heaven on Earth!

If you have not heard anything from Brian, you are in for an extraordinary treat. Brian's voice is an incredible gift that every person should be exposed to. "The Dark is My Delight" is a wonderful display of Brian's range and vocal gifts. A collection of mostly 14th Century lute songs, it is a perfect subject for Brian's unique voice. "Come Again, Sweet Love" is a perfect opening song as it gives you his full range and style. In the beginning you cannot believe that this sweet, melodious voice can be coming from a human, muchless a male. You'll be thinking that throughout this wonderful CD.

There are few CDs that are so extraordinary but then again this is Brian's first CD. EVERYONE should listen and expose themselves to Brian Asawa's talents. He can only be looked upon as a rising countertenor star soon to be at... Read more

I've really tried to like Brian Osawa but when I hear this CD, it sounds to me like he's faking his way through the songs, though I doubt he in fact is. It's passionless.Thankfully I bought this CD used for only $9.99 CDN. Regretably, I will likely be selling it back to the used CD store from which it came. Daniel Taylor and James Bowman's Love Bade me Welcome would be a much better selection, i bought it new and its worth every cent!
