Though some may take issue with various aspects of performance, as is only to be expected, the fact remains that these are all top-shelf performances and recordings that any lover of Bach's keyboard works would be proud to include among their collection, especially at this ridiculously low price. Highly recommended. 33 of 42 people found the following review helpful By Forever Rocker (California) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Bach: Keyboard Works (Audio CD) An amazing box-set of all Bach's major keyboard works by the fantastic Angela Hewitt. Fortunately for my ears, these are all performed on a grand piano, not a tinkling harpsichord or a tinny fortepiano. I know that many original instrument purists will argue that Bach wrote these wonderful keyboard compositions for the harpsichord, as the modern piano obviously didn't exist at the time. I have owned all the original discs virtually from when they were issued, and they are all treasured gems of my collection. For Bach's keyboard works on the piano I don't think any of these discs can be bettered.Angela Hewitt has received universal critical acclaim for all of these recordings. Rob Cowan said that her playing "always sounds as natural as breathing," which I think is perfectly put. If I had to choose just one recording of any of these works it would be Hewitt's - The Goldberg Variations in particular are simply sublime. She has an impeccable technique, a real depth of scholarship and - most importantly of all - an unsurpassed understanding of and empathy with Bach's music. She makes the music a monumental pleasure to listen to: the dances really dance, there is a spiritual depth and real... Read more |
