All the recordings in this 15-CD collection of Bach's keyboard works are here performed on the modern piano by the renowned Angela Hewitt, who has made a reputation performing said works over the past couple of decades. Though some may take issue with various aspects of performance, as is only to be expected, the fact remains that these are all top-shelf performances and recordings that any lover of Bach's keyboard works would be proud to include among their collection, especially at this ridiculously low price. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grand Bach Solo Keyboard Works On A Modern Grand, October 20, 2010

An amazing box-set of all Bach's major keyboard works by the fantastic Angela Hewitt. Fortunately for my ears, these are all performed on a grand piano, not a tinkling harpsichord or a tinny fortepiano. I know that many original instrument purists will argue that Bach wrote these wonderful keyboard compositions for the harpsichord, as the modern piano obviously didn't exist at the time. I would argue that if Bach had been able to witness a piano - even a fortepiano - that he would have preferred this instrument. More importantly, Angela performs these piano masterpieces in a historically-informed manner: no use of pedal and a monotone delivery, as the harpsichord had no control over volume dynamics. The result is dazzling performances with the full warm sound (thank Hyperion's engineers as well) of a grand piano.

Apparently most of these works were recorded using a Steinway, but for the Well-Tempered Clavier discs, she opted for her own Fazioli piano, which she had... Read more

    5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, March 18, 2011
This review is from: Bach: Keyboard Works (Audio CD)
This fantastic box contains all of Angela Hewitt's magnificent solo recordings of Bach for Hyperion which cover virtually the whole of Bach's solo keyboard works. I have owned all the original discs virtually from when they were issued, and they are all treasured gems of my collection. For Bach's keyboard works on the piano I don't think any of these discs can be bettered.

Angela Hewitt has received universal critical acclaim for all of these recordings. Rob Cowan said that her playing "always sounds as natural as breathing," which I think is perfectly put. If I had to choose just one recording of any of these works it would be Hewitt's - The Goldberg Variations in particular are simply sublime. She has an impeccable technique, a real depth of scholarship and - most importantly of all - an unsurpassed understanding of and empathy with Bach's music. She makes the music a monumental pleasure to listen to: the dances really dance, there is a spiritual depth and real... Read more
