Homage to Maria Callas

Product Description

Homage to Maria Callas is a collection of beloved French and Italian operatic masterpieces performed by Angela Gheorghiu, the defining diva of this century. The program is inspired by the career and recordings of Maria Callas, the greatest diva of the last century. The arias are shared favorites of both Callas and Gheorghiu, and Angela's new recording demonstrates once again her extraordinary vocal and emotional range. Angela Gheorghiu said recently, "Callas was original in everything she did; she was a phenomenon. In every performance she gave her all. She was the most wonderful painter and you can always hear exactly the right colour in her voice. Just hearing her sound, you understand all the power or fragility of her emotions. That's a rare talent and a great gift." Gheorghiu continued, "EMI was her record label and it's mine too. It feels like a family". Recorded in London and in New York, the repertoire of Gheorghiu's first studio recital in six years (during which time she recorded several complete operas, including a multiaward- winning Madama Butterfly, shows her versatility in lyric, spinto and mezzo roles, with each of which she feels a strong emotional connection. Three versions of Angela Gheorghiu - Homage to Maria Callas offer music lovers a choice of material. * Standard Edition consists of a CD in a digipack with a booklet excerpting Gheorghiu's essay. Both Deluxe and Standard editions feature song texts in English, French, German and the original language, if different, as well as booklet text in all three languages.

It no doubt seemed to be like a good - if slightly desperate - commercial sales ploy to try to boost sales by linking the names of Angela Gheorghiu and Maria Callas. The blurb on the back-cover of this disc asserts that our "Angela" is "the defining diva of this century", whereas I would concede her a more modest, yet still considerable, status as one of at least three great sopranos active today. Meanwhile, few would contest that Callas was indisputably supreme amongst post-war twentieth century singers and many would anoint her "Greatest Soprano Ever". Thus nervous EMI marketing executives have sought to circumvent the vicissitudes of early twenty-first century economics by banking on the certainties of an era when classical music was a more profitable enterprise, while simultaneously hoping that no-one will seize the opportunity of making invidious comparisons between their current star and her idol.

4.0 out of 5 stars Angelic Angela, January 4, 2012
    Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Homage to Maria Callas (Audio CD)
Purchase this CD for the beautiful voice of Angela Gheorghiu. The Jewel Song from "Faust" is breathtaking as are many of the others.
There are two selections from "La Traviata," but every other selection on the CD is by a different composer.

The curious aspect of this CD is that it is labeled an "Homage to Maria Callas." To my ear, Gheorghiu and Callas have nothing in
common. Gheorghiu is much more the lyric soprano that Callas never was. Moreover, even though Callas had a broad repertoire of
operas, her two most famous roles were Tosca and Norma, neither of which is featured on this CD.

Thus, I say again, purchase this CD for the angelic voice of Angela Gheorghiu, not as a reprise of the career of Maria Callas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful voice and singing I have ever heard., February 19, 2012
This review is from: Homage to Maria Callas (Audio CD)
No question that Angela Gheorghiu's singing is one of the best of the active sopranos. I saw her performance in Met. She is also one of the best of the veteran sopranos.

Her singing is the one reminding Maria Callas. I collect Callas' CD. But I think Angela Gheorghiu's voice and technic is super.

Yes This CD remind me the voice of Callas. Especially the begining of the first song. As a matter of fact listening to the whole album Callas is back again and again but just better.
